The EFT Approach

Lori utilizes Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to help mend broken or damaged relationships. The EFT approach has shown to be very successful with about 75% of cases and creates improvements in 90% of couples coming in for therapy. It is a short-term approach whose goal is to establish the reconnection between partners. Susan Johnson of the Ottawa Family Institute developed this type of therapy, and her research has been published in dozens of scientific journals.  The EFT Approach is the most taught method of marital counseling around the world because it strengthens the bond of your relationship significantly decreasing the chances of a relapse.

How Couples Therapy Works

A couples counseling program with Lori will help get your relationship back on track In a relatively short time,  a couple can begin to recognize  and eventually express their needs for love, support, protection and comfort that are often hidden or disguised by the angry words used in repetitive self-defeating patterns of conflict or arguments.

Here are the 3 main stages of the program that you and your partner will work through together with Lori:

Stage 1 begins as soon as you walk into the safe and encouraging space that is our local office in Irvine. You and your partner will sit down with Lori to discuss and identify the issues that you are experiencing. The focus of this beginning stage is de-escalation and stabilization, meaning that the underlying problems are identified and the emotions that continue to reinforce the negative cycle are acknowledged and explored. Together we will focus on these negative patterns and work on changing these negative interaction cycles in a non-judgmental environment.

The second stage is where the real change begins. Lori will help you and your partner identify the needs that aren’t being met and help each other understand your own unique experiences. Then  you can begin creating solutions to meet each other’s attachment needs and base your interaction as a couple on understanding and listening “with the heart” to find the feeling that lie behind your partner’s words. This is the emotional focus behind Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.

The third and final stage is where your relationship begins to blossom once again, while you and your partner work closely together and with Lori to implement the solutions that you created in the previous stage into your day-to-day life and interactions with each other. You will be able to accept your partner’s experience and create new healthier interaction patterns. These positive interactions will be reinforced and eventually become habit, establishing a new, healthy cycle of behavior between you and your partner Where you feel more like a team which is one of the secrets of a long-lived, successful marriage!

Love isn’t always perfect; but it doesn’t mean that it’s not worth fighting for. For some couples who have found love, it may sometimes seem to fade away or be clouded by painful arguing and a loss of trust. A relationship without trust is like a car without gas. You can stay in it all you want, but it won’t go anywhere. Often, couples get stuck in a cycle of arguing, but are unable to address and resolve the issue. The good news is that there is a way to restore trust and that special connection that brought you together in the first place, with a little help from Lori Drozd Counseling in Diamond Bar.
